Introduction - Lizard Sweets

A serendipitous encounter and a joint passion for exploring a wide range of music genres brought together Alex Love (lyrics & vocals) and Pete Marshall (guitars, engineering, production) to form LIZARD SWEETS.

On the way home from a ROCKET66 gig (for whom Alex Love was the singer), dep bass player Paul Anthony played some LUTZ demo’s he’d been working on with guitarist/producer Pete Marshall. Alex loved what he was a hearing and demanded to be involved. That was 2020.

Covid-19 UK lockdown meant that Alex and Pete would not meet in person for over a year, but they established a prolific writing partnership and a remote recording process that has seen them write and record 210 songs in 2 years, releasing 15 albums.

LIZARD SWEETS have gained recognition for their talents and their consistent, high quality, multi genre-spanning music – having been described a progressive-punk, industrial, alternative rock, art rock, electro, garage rock, and even trance/techno. No matter what you call it, there is a signature LIZARD SWEETS sound – classic fuzzy guitars and driving bass lines combined with beautifully crafted vocals and dark lyrical subjects with the occasional slice of wry British humour.

Drawing on many shared and disparate influences LIZARD SWEETS songs have been compared to Bowie, Blur, Beck, Primus, Stone Temple Pilots, The Black Keys, The Clash, Joy Division and Pink Floyd.

In March 2022, in recognition of their contribution to British music, LIZARD SWEETS were invited to donate their entire catalogue to the British Library’s Sound Archive in order to preserve their music for the nation, in perpetuity.

LIZARD SWEETS are honoured and humbled to be recognised alongside giants of the British music industry as culturally significant.

After the brutality of the ILLUSION-ELEMENTS-PORTRAITS triple release, CHRONICLES explored a lighter, more melodic indie direction, with cleaner guitar tones and laid-back drums. The music writing deviated significantly from the original Lizard Sweets principle – steer clear of musical cliches and common chord progressions. The opening track “High Tide” is a classic example of a common chord progression, evoking the dreamy, youthfulness of young lovers running away together. “Super Cat” a 60’s style R‘n’B romp inspired by Alex’s cat, Furby. “Tumbling” explores the Style Council soul/funk inspirations with flute and saxophone. “Mischievous” nudging Alex and Pete’s blues leanings, adding synth “bleeps and blops” and fuzzy guitar. Part 2 - The making of ILLUSIONS, ELEMENTS & PORTRAITS

LUTZ Pete Marshall and Paul Anthony already had 20 or so tracks of music recorded when Alex Love was introduced. The tracks were destined for hardcore/alternative rock/industrial project LUTZ something that Pete Marshall and Paul Anthony had been working on since 2018. LUTZ was inspired to a certain extent by Public Service Broadcasting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Service_Broadcasting_(band) and their use of samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material.
